Mercedes Benz R-Class

Mercedes Benz decides to upgrade its R-class to a high performance model R63 AMG with its diesel version, the R320 CDI. Initially introduced in the year 2006, the automaker informs that R-class is the first model from the company to combine the merits of a sports utility vehicle and a luxury car. Apart from the new AMG and CDI versions, there are two smaller versions: the R350, which is equipped with the V-6 engine and R500 which is powered by V-8. This seven speed automatic transmission work nicely with an all wheel drive. The R-class wagon is an inch longer than the S-class sedan. Two sunroofs are optional, a usual glass panel or a double sized panoramic unit with a glass panel. When the roof is opened, half of the panel moves over the other so the headroom is not at all affected. The powered roller blinds in the roof are there to protect the occupants from the sun heat.

The privacy glass installed is a standard one. A single lift tailgate is also installed. Fully independent suspension of the R-class makes use of the double wishbones up the front and four links at the rear. The rear air suspension is meant for the load leveling and is standard. The driver can select three operating modes viz normal comfort and sport.

R class has ample space for six persons with a three pairs of seats. Space row between first and second is 34 inches and 30 inches between second and third. There is enough space kept in the second row seats for a person to walk through to the third row. The seats in the both rear row can be folded. Optional second row console has few additional cup holders and bottle holder located in each of the door pocket. There are leather inserts in the seat pocket. The multifunction steering wheel has brushed aluminum accents with an electronic gear selector mounted on steering column. The upper section of two tone dashboard is over the instrument cluster which keeps two cylindrical points for speedometer and tachometer. The standard radio includes the weather band reception which has a single CD slot apart from the controls for an optional satellite radio. A plug in the glove box is connected to MP3 players. The optional flat screen monitors on the head rest of the front seats can provide pleasure to the rear passengers.

The R63 AMG has a 507 hp and 465 pound torque. A 3.5 liter V6 in the R350 generates 268 horsepower and 258 torques. The R500 5litre V8 generates 302 hp and 339 pound torque. The R500s 5 litre V-8 produces 302 hp with 330 torque. The engine transmission is able to overlap as many as three of gear ratios to get the transmission in the required great. All wheel drive comes with three differentials. The car comes equipped with the side curtain airbags which protect the occupants in all the three row seats and door mounted side impact airbags for the front occupants. There is a rollover sensor which can activate seat belt tensioners. The antilock and Electronic stability program comes as a standard with the car and also has a tire pressure sensor system. The car steering feels just great for this class of car and it requires a less of effort with an altogether satisfying response. R500 stays in control on any sort of roads without many efforts, and it remains in total control and behaves graciously. The power and acceleration of V8 is immense and accurate. The automatic transmission is tuned to function effortlessly and is programmed to be in a gear for the desired duration.
